Caroline Kennedy Library Book Discussion 2009 - 2010
Please join our 2009-2010 Book Discussion Program as we explore “Love and Other Destinations.” We will be meeting at 7:00 on the first Thursday of the month (September-April) at the Caroline Kennedy Library. Please stop by the library a month or so before the program to secure your book. Please contact Mary Howard at 313-791-3824 with any questions.
Love and Other Destinations…
September 3 "Feast of Love” by Charles Baxter
“Feast of Love is a radiant work of art that evokes the romance that the characters describe. To find out how things play out for this extraordinary bunch of ostensibly ordinary Midwesterners, pick up this funny, sad, gorgeous novel.”(Wall Street Journal)ast of Love is just that--a sumptuous work of fiction
October 1 “Supreme Courtship ” by Christopher Buckley
“Imagine if TV courtroom queen Judge Judy looked like a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, drove a cherry-red pickup and was appointed to the Supreme Court. This hot bench scenario provides the basis for Christopher Buckley's new comic novel, Supreme Courtship.”.(
November 5 “A Prayer for the Dying” by Stewart O’Nan
“A fine, terse novel about the circumstantial nature of evil and the terrible fragility of man.” (New York Times Book Review)
December 3 “A Bit on the Side” by William Trevor
“Trevor reveals his native Ireland as a world sandwiched between modernity and its accompanying wealth, secularism and vulgarity, and a past that was more soulful and pious but also more restrictive.” (Publishers Weekly)
January 7 “The Downhill Lie...” by Carl Hiaasen
“Follow Carl, lesson by lesson, session by session, round by round, on his addiction to improve at the most baffling of pursuits. You'll imagine yourself exactly in his position time after time between the covers of his journal.” (Average Golfer.com)
February 4 “The Leisure Seeker” by Michael Zadoorian
“Just as he did in Second Hand, Zadoorian shows us that it's often the overlooked, the forgotten and the marginal in life where you often find the most fascinating stories. And, with Leisure Seeker, he does so not with a dazzling style but rather by tapping into the vital currents pulsing beneath even the most mundane moments” (Metro Times)
March 4 “Sag Harbor” by Colson Whitehead
“Detailing the life of a dorky teenager in a community that's peculiar but oddly familiar, "Sag Harbor" is a kind of black "Brighton Beach Memoirs," but it's spiced with the anxieties of being African American in a culture determined to dictate what that means.”(Washington Post)
April1 “ Revolutionary Road” by Richard Yates
“Yates's incisive, moving, and often very funny prose weaves a tale that is at once a fascinating period piece and a prescient anticipation of the way we live now.”(Amazon.co.uk)
