The Dearborn Heights Fire Department has the primary responsibility to protect 58,264 permanent residents occupying 23,264 residential properties that covers 12.07 square miles. In addition, the department protects 1,146 commercial businesses and operates a program of mandatory fire inspections for these occupancy types.
In Dearborn Heights, the Fire Department is also responsible for handling emergency medical calls and transporting patients to area hospitals. Fire Department personnel who ride the rescue squad and attend patients are licensed paramedics.
Two fire stations are located within the city limits. Headquarters Fire Station is located at 1999 N. Beech Daly (1000' south of Ford Road) and Fire Station #1 is located at 4500 S. Telegraph (northwest corner of Telegraph and Annapolis). At 17,500 square feet, Headquarters station houses an administrative wing, training center, fire suppression living quarters and apparatus room. Station #1 was built in 1973 and features many of the amenities of Headquarters Station but on a smaller scale.
Authorized strength of the Dearborn Heights Fire Department consists of 53 personnel. Positions on the fire department include a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, (2) Fire Inspectors, (6) Captains, (6) Lieutenants, (12) Pump Operators and (24) Firefighter/Paramedics. Two of the department's members serve on the Haz-Mat Team for Western Wayne County and one member serves on the Urban Search & Rescue Team.
Overall, the Dearborn Heights Fire Department responded to 6692 emergency incidents in 2011. EMS calls accounted for 4,897 of these emergencies with 1795 calls being Fire / Emergency responses.
