Fire Department

The mission of the Dearborn Heights Fire Department is to prevent and suppress fires, to provide an effective emergency medical system and to assist in the elimination or control of any incident that is a threat to life or property.

Dearborn Heights Fire Department has the primary responsibility to protect 57,774 permanent residents occupying 23,264 residential properties that cover 12.07 square miles.  The department protects 1,146 commercial businesses and operates a program of mandatory fire inspections for these occupancy types.

In addition to fire suppression and prevention, all fire department personnel are licensed paramedics and handle all 911 medical emergency calls and transport to area hospitals.  We are licensed in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.  Our fire engines are non-transporting ALS engines.  We respond from either of our two fire stations which are strategically located in the north and south end of the city.

The DHFD is supported by 56 personnel when fully staffed.  We currently have a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Marshal,  Fire Inspector, EMS Coordinator, (6) Captains, (6) Lieutenants, (12) Pump Operators and (27) Firefighters.  We are a member of the Western Wayne County Hazardous Materials Response Team and two of our members serve on this team.  Two other members of our department serve on the Western Wayne County Urban Search & Rescue Team.  We also have an in-house grant writer who has acquired $2.5 million in grant money for equipment and personnel for the department.

The fire department members are also involved in the community through various charity functions, spirit festival, and CPR classes.  We have a school based fire safety program that reaches kids from preschool to high school.  We also hold an annual open house during fire safety week in October.

The Dearborn Heights Fire Department responded to a total of 8,079 emergency incidents in 2014.  This past year we saw another increase in our run volume with 6565 EMS runs and 1,514 fire runs.
